Youth Leadership
Troop 70 develops scouts to be leaders in the troop and in their future. There are several excellent training programs which make a real difference in youth leadership development. These programs are the cornerstone of Troop 70's leadership program.
These programs support youth leadership education for their positions of responsibility. Honor rank advancement requires serving in a position of responsibility for at least six months, or carrying out a Scoutmaster-approved leadership project to help the troop.
Leadership Training
Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops
ILST teaches Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to be most effective in them. With this training, Scouts in leadership positions better understand their responsibilities, equipping them with the organizational and leadership skills to be successful. Troop 70 conducts ILST training sessions at least once a year. See your Scoutmaster for the next available session.
Oak Leaf
The introductory youth leadership training in our Council is called Oak Leaf. It is a full day and overnight course put on by youth and adult volunteers in each District. Participants must be at least 12 years old, have earned the First Class rank, and recommended by their Scoutmaster to attend. All boys serving in any leadership position should attend. The course is offered by several districts within the council annually. See your Scoutmaster for a recommendation.
National Youth Leadership Training
The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must be, what they must know, and what they must do. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on how to. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
NYLT is a six-day leadership training course for youth troop leaders. Participants must be at least 13 years old, earned the First Class rank, and have completed ILST training with their troop. See your Scoutmaster for a recommendation.
National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience
NAYLE is an exciting program that enhances leadership skills and expands upon the team-building and ethical decision-making skills learned in NYLT. NAYLE emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and selfless service, using the core elements of NYLT to help youth strengthen these skills. The NAYLE course is available at all four national high-adventure bases.
NAYLE will equip youth leaders to be better unit leaders, NYLT staff members, and/or superior camp staff members. Participants must be at least 14 years old, hold a unit leadership position, and have completed NYLT. See your Scoutmaster for a recommendation.
Positions of Responsibility
Every scout is given the opportunity to hold a position of responsibility since it is required for rank advancement. There are many different positions for scouts to take, and all give the scouts the opportunity to practice leadership.
